Day 18 Ukevember ’12! “The Way You Make Me Feel” Michael Jackson

Everybody loves Michael Jackson! I have been wanting to do this song for a long time. The only thing that halted my experiment was not being able to find ANYONE online that had the correct chords. Look no further, here they are. You can play these chords along with Michael Jackson’s video! Go ahead, try it. I also use the alternative ways of playing the chords as well. Check out the video.

Day 17 Ukevember ’12! “Dreaming with a Broken Heart” John Mayer

Sad songs are my favorite. I’m not quite sure…maybe because the lyrics are more meaningful…I guess if you’ve been hurt before you really like sad songs. Here’s one from John Mayer. There are plenty of sad songs out there that you don’t have to listen to when you’re sad. I feel like this one fits that category. Or am I the only one that feels this way?

Day 16 Ukevember ’12! “Can’t Help Falling in Love”

Still on the love kick. 🙂 It turns out there are a lot of songs about love…and break-up…and loving again. You can’t help but fall in love with this classic old crooner song. I remember singing this from a karaoke cd with one of my favorite Philippine families. Every time I hear it I’m reminded of this wonderful family that I miss.
Three reasons to play this song:
1. Nostalgic for the old times.
2. Telling someone you Can’t Help Falling in Love with him/her.
3. Want to add a song to your playlist that is in triple time!

Day 15 Ukevember ’12! “Our Love is Here to Stay” George & Ira Gershwin

There are certain movies individuals watch over and over and over…my movie is “When Harry Met Sally”. It’s about love, the good and the bad, happens near Christmas time, and has some really great swing music on the soundtrack (Also forgot to mention Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal). Today’s video is for the “When Harry Met Sally” Fans, the lover of ‘love’ fans, and the swing fans.

Day 14 Ukevember! “On the Sunny Side of the Street”

If you don’t know swing, start off with this song! There are fast versions, but today I played it mellow 🙂 I’ll upload the tab for it soon! Enjoy 🙂

Day 13 Ukevember ’12! Mumford & Sons “I Will Wait”

I believe this one’s for the spiritual person. I didn’t grow up with a mandatory Sunday outing to church or a nightly prayer before bed. If anything, my mandatory ‘thing’ everyday was to do my ‘chores’. That was what was important in our house. I guess somebody has to do it – keep things clean, having a healthy looking house, right? What about keeping your mind and spirit healthy?
I always wonder what my schoolmates did everyday in their household. Was everyone else reading bible scriptures and praying for health and freeing spirit? I’ve learned a lot about spirituality in the last couple years. I’ll save that for another post.
What I HAVE learned is that unless you’re in a vastly populated Hispanic community, or the African-American community, your music at church will be a lot different.
I’ve been adding to my spiritual practice here in Phoenix, but what has been lacking is the music. There is a church…name unlisted…while they have great musicians…their songs lack words and depth. In attending this church we’ve sung songs that have one line over and over again. I would love to see this song (or others like it) played in the church. If the words aren’t right, we’ll make better ones.
For now, I think these are good ones to start with.
Take a look.

Day 12 Ukevember ’12! Neon Trees “Everybody Talks”

Gossip is to Middle School as… ? I bet others could say “Gossip is to Adulthood” as well. Ever been in the middle of a story that was passed around your school, office, or family? I bet…I think it was passed around in high school that I could only hold boyfriends for as long as two weeks. Wow! When I heard that was going around I was hurt. I’m sure others of you had worse things passed around. That’s what this song is about – everybody talks.
If you’d like to pass on some ‘news’ of the day, maybe bring up something ‘enlightening’. Bring up a conversation that will turn on light bulbs and get others talking to BETTER the universe and themselves. Next time you think you have gossip, throw it away and start off with actual conversation. 🙂

Day 11 of Ukevember ’12! Michael Franti & Spearhead “Say Hey, I Love You”

Say Hey, I be gone today, but I’ll be back around the way…But I know one thing, that I love you. Awe. Sometimes it’s hard to get those words out. But when you know, you know…you know?
My Love is not a ‘memorize lyrics’ sort of man but he took the time to learn the lyrics to this song and sang it to me. There was snow falling, he was singing (well, rapping 🙂 ), and I knew that the lyrics in the chorus had the words “I love you” and would in turn be the first time he said those three special words to me! Which leads to my top 3 reasons to play this song:
1. To play for someone you want to tell them “I love you” in a fun upbeat way.
2. Work on your ‘chunk’ strum on ukulele
3. Play a song that has some rap in it.

Day 10 of Ukevember ’12! The Wreckers “Leave the Pieces”

This was the first song I learned on guitar – by request of my former Orlando roommate, Juliemar. She is quite the vocalist and chose this song for us to do a duet. Now I live across the country, far away from Orlando. Today’s song is for her, even though I need a lot more vocal practice, and I miss singing/playing music with you! We are the CYT’s. Don’t know what that is? You’ll find out one day.
Top 3 reasons to play this song:
1. You like a little country and want to play it on your ukulele.
2. Want to do a duet with someone else – there are some neat harmonies here!
3. You just had a breakup and want to sing your heart out!

Day 9 of Ukevember ’12! Burke/Van Huesen “It’s Always You”

If there’s something that I love just as much as soft warm brownies or finishing each other’s sentences, it’s Chet Baker. I love the way he does this song, his voice, yes! Today is brought to you by Chet Baker on the mind. 🙂
Top 3 reasons to play this song:
1. You’re a fan of Chet Baker and want to sing his lonely songs.
2. You want to send the message of this song to someone out in the audience while you’re playing.
3. You want to brush up on all your Major and minor 7th chords. 😉
