Ukevember 2016 Day 13: I Wanna Be Like You

Adding another friend in today! I wrangled my friend, Laura Noble, into playing with me today at the zoo with our kids. ๐Ÿ™‚ She also thought it would be fun to play this song in front of the apes…it was so fun! Enjoy!
**Reminder** I’ve gone live with my Ukevember this year, so pardon any mistakes…anything happens when you go live! Please take a moment to upload your own video and tag #ukevember to follow along with all the other players out there.

Day 21, Ukevember 2014! Bring Me Sunshine / Jive Aces

The melody from this tune kind of reminds me of Tiny Bubbles for some reason. Maybe its the 7 chords…hm…

Today’s Ukevember tune is brought to you by an ukulele student who introduced it to me! We haven’t played it together, but when/if we get back to ukulele lessons, we will definitely add this tune. BTW, Steve, I wish you were singing it and not me! ๐Ÿ™‚

Chords to come soon.

Join me in Ukevember if you haven’t yet. The month is almost over!

Day 17, Ukevember 2014! Straight No Chaser / Thelonius Monk

Whew…this one is nowhere near the tempo it needs to be BUT it is a work in progress. I never looked at that song until the day I recorded it! As I was practicing, I noticed this is a really great tune to use as practice for moving along the fret board (the first 4 frets anyway).
I recorded this on our “Babymoon” where we took a cruise to different ports for the day. Watch the video to see where we recorded today!
Will post where I found the lead sheet soon!

Day 9, Ukevember 2014! That’s it, I Quit, I’m Moving on / Sam Cooke

Ooh, this is a good song. I didn’t give myself enough breath and the page tried to fly away, but it’s up there! I found a cover by Adele and then downloaded Sam Cooke’s original. I always think of what kind of action or movie could be done to songs…well this would make for a great break up song if you ever needed one!
Chords to come soon.
Have you uploaded a video to join in Ukevember yet this year? What are you waiting for? ๐Ÿ™‚

Day 2, Ukevember 2014! Dream a Little Dream of Me / Mama Cass Elliot with The Mamas & the Papas

Woohoo! I made it to day 2 of Ukevember. At least as much as I could get out last year ;).

Today I’m playing another swing tune favorite. In the end of the recording, my phone was buzzing –I could hear it but you can’t hear it in the video…Oh well. No more takes, here it is.

I think my favorite recording is when Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong recorded together. That’s my favorite recording to listen and dance to.

I will upload the chords later! Enjoy and add your own video to Ukevember! All you have to do is play a song on your uke in November (I’m trying all 30 days).

See you tomorrow!

Day 1, Ukevember 2014! Moondance / Van Morrison

Aloha! It’s that time again. Ukevember, my made up holiday month! The idea is to play a song on your ukulele for every day in November. That’s 30 days. You can do it! Join me and some of my other very awesome friends for this journey.

Today is our first day of Ukevember. We are playing one of our favorite songs to dance to…especially with a live band. Stay ’til the end so you can see our Bloopers. Boop! Enjoy and I’ll upload the chords soon! See you for day two!

Day 14 Ukevember! “On the Sunny Side of the Street”

If you don’t know swing, start off with this song! There are fast versions, but today I played it mellow ๐Ÿ™‚ I’ll upload the tab for it soon! Enjoy ๐Ÿ™‚

Day 8 Ukevember! Au Privave by Charlie Parker

I’ve always wanted to play Charlie Parker solos on a mallet instrument (marimba/vibraphone/xylophone). Well, today, I’ve challenged myself to play Au Privave from a lead sheet on an ukulele! In the video you might hear a metronome. I tell my students all the time, “Play it SLOW to get your muscle memory working, and with a metronome!”. I’m following my own advice. This recording is slow, but I would like to repost a video of me playing this at the correct tempo. Take a listen.
Top 3 Reasons to play this tune:
1. Because you love Charlie Parker (don’t know who he was? Google him)
2. Want to show off your made skills on the instrument!
3. Because you like bebop jazz.

I haven’t put the tab together, but I will as soon as I can.

Day 19 of Ukevember! Don’t Get Around Much Anymore by Duke Ellington

This post is two fold: inspiration from my friend who joined me in celebration of Ukevember and the fact that I miss my swing dancing friends in Orlando, FL. I am missing a Jammin’ weekend and I ‘missed the Saturday dance’. ๐Ÿ™‚ I would define thisย Tabย as idiomatic …you basically put your fingers on the chords and your hands are there for the picking. Day 13 of Ukevember! I Wish I Knew How it Would Feel to be Free by Nina Simone

Our final site was originally Pagosa Springs. I never thought I’d be in a bathing suit and it would be snowing at the same time. A short drive through Durango, CO for lunch and more scenic drives led us toย Mesa Verde National Park. The fog wanted to be in our video more than anything, I guess, and we didn’t get a look at the cliff dwellings because of it. Oh well, this gave me more practice of trying to make smoother cuts. Enjoy!
