Day 2, Ukevember 2013! Guava Jelly / Ka’au Crater Boys

Aloha, Ukevember watchers!

Today we participated in the MS Walk at the Phoenix Zoo with our getup in the video. We were up early and ready for Day 2 of Ukevember as well.

We have a fun song for you today. My husband helped me out on this one – plus I think he just wanted in on the fun. If you’ve never heard this song, you’re in for some funny lyrics. Something that says “Come rub up on my belly like guava jelly” just gives you a laugh!
Try it with these chords.

Day 1, Ukevember 2013! Oh, What a Day / Ingrid Michaelson

It is that time of year again where I try to convince everyone to join me in this made-up celebration of playing your ukulele EVERY DAY in the month of November. What kind of name for a celebration like this would be convenient? The answer is Ukevember.

Most people ask why would you do this? Others say “uke on”. There are all kinds of answers (for practice, to keep a log of songs I know, educational purposes, etc.) but I really started this to put more music into the world. Help me put more music into the world by joining me and uploading songs you’ve played on your ukulele for Ukevember!

Ukevember 2013 has started and Day 1 is a song that I know isn’t on the radio, but it’s found its way into my playlist. Have you ever heard someone say they’ve had a rough day and you’re never quite sure what to respond with? I think the lyrics in this tune provide a useful response: Now that you’re (it’s) gone, I (you) can move on to something good. What do you think? I love this song like I love my Sunday mornings and reflection time.
Here are the chords!

Day 6 of Ukevember ’12! Israel Kamakawiwo’ole “White Sandy Beach”

Ever been to Hawaii? Imagining yourself on white sandy beaches while at work? Well, here’s a song that I was thinking about today. I’ve had it in my songbook for a while, but hadn’t uploaded it yet. It has 4 chords, F, Bb, Bbminor, and C. If you need practice playing from F to Bb, this could be the song for you!
Here are the Chords and Lyrics to Israel Kamakawiwa ole “White Sandy Beach”
Top 3 reasons to play this song:
1. My current reason: If you’re getting married in Hawaii, near white sandy beaches 🙂
2. To practice playing in the key of F.
3. To play a song to relax the crowd.

Day 2 of Ukevember ’12! All Over Now by Eric Hutchinson

Today’s song is about moving on and letting go. Yesterday was “I Won’t Give Up” by Jason Mraz.
These are complete opposites! I think sometimes one of the hardest things to do in life is to let go. Maybe the hardest part is realizing that you SHOULD move on and let go. Or maybe the hardest part is telling someone they should move on and let go. Some people can’t have meaningful conversations…or tell someone how they feel. There are a lot of hard things in life, I guess. One of them is also writing words to a song. I love Eric Hutchinson because of his playful way of using words in his songs. Take a listen, or look at the lyrics below. After you view my top 3 reasons to play this song, of course!
Here are the Chords and Lyrics to Eric Hutchinson “All Over Now”
I’m adding my top 3 special reasons why you’d learn to play this song. Sometimes musicians look for songs to express their feelings. Each post I’ll add some reasons I thought of.
Reasons for playing this song?
1.To play for someone to let them know you are moving on and letting go
2. To play for a someone who should move on and let go
3. To play for the sake of singing words put to playful use and using a cool new pluck on your ukulele

Day 6 of Ukevember!!!!!! The Big Bang Theory Theme by Barenaked Ladies

Took our lazy Sunday on the road today and we’ll get to take you with us in today’s video! Several places we visited you’ll see have amazing scenery! Don’t miss the interesting fact below. We learned something new today.

  • White Rock, NM – The Rio Grande is right behind me.
  • Los Alamos, NM – Named “The town that never was” after Oppenheimer declared the scientists needed a Laboratory with specific land requirements…it’s the only reason the city was built…AND **INTERESTING FACT* Everyone who was born in that time had a birthplace of PO BOX 1663, Santa Fe, NM instead of Los Alamos…even drivers license! No one was to speak of this place. Hush hush stuff. If you know anymore interesting facts about Los Alamos please comment below. 🙂
  • Abiquiu Reservoir, NM – Fantastic reservoir and red rocks in the distance.
  • Rio Grande River, NM – Standing on a bridge with a “Keep Off” sign that was supposed to prohibit us from getting our footage. We succeeded!
  • Taos, NM – Stopped by to visit a friend of Josh’s family and a bite to eat. Friendly, friendly.

Song: Big Bang Theory Theme by Barenaked Ladies. Chords and Lyrics.

Day 5 of Ukevember!!!!! Two Princes by Spin Doctors

Today’s song is about making choices, which love will you choose and why will you choose it? Today’s struggle is where to record these videos since the temperature outside is reaching “stay inside under the covers” weather. There’s a simple 4 chord song about choosing…you live, you learn, right?

Our song for the 5th of Ukevember is “Two Princes” by Spin Doctors. Chords and Lyrics.

Special kudos to people who can tell me what other tidbit of a song I squeezed in there.

Day 4 of Ukevember!!!! Look for the Silver Lining by Jerome Kern

Being optimistic is today’s theme with “Look for the Silver Lining” written by Jerome Kern in the 1920’s musical SallyChords and Lyrics.

Today you’ll find us on Canyon Road in Santa Fe, NM. This road is lined with galleries, statues, and cafes galore. We visited someone famous who once said Santa Fe was “laid out by a drunk riding backward on a horse.” It’s true…there are no grid patterns. Driving around Santa Fe you will find there are 2 Paseo de Paraltas. It can get kind of confusing.

Can you see who we visited?

Day 3 of Ukevember!!! Faster by Matt Nathanson

Day 3 of Ukevember and still cookin’ with the modern songs. This song makes me smile. I decided to play a song in duple and with a more complicated strum.

This was recorded at Journey’s End sculpture on Museum Hill in Santa Fe, NM. When I first moved here, this was the place where I had my first nose bleed (adjusting to the dry climates that are of New Mexico). It’s both part of history and a bit sentiment *chuckle*.

Today’s song is “Faster” by Matt Nathanson.    Chords and Lyrics

If you’re wondering what Ukevember is…listen in or poke around my blog.

Day 2 of Ukevember!! Hold You in My Arms by Ray LaMontagne

It’s the second post for Ukevember. This was recorded in Cornell Park, Santa Fe, NM. Some people brought their dogs out to play with them…it’s cold *brrrr* here. My fingers were freezing!

I’m playing “Hold You in My Arms” by Ray LaMontagne. Chords and Lyrics Here. He has a beautiful voice. This is a great song.

Felt like some people needed to be held in my ukulele arms today. Enjoy!

Day 1 of Ukevember! Promises by Morning Benders

Taken from our porch in Santa Fe, NM with a view of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in the background.

I’m playing “Promises” by Morning Benders.

And here are the chords and lyrics.
